5 ways women can prevent a UTI

UTIs are pleasant for nobody; however, this particular type of infection predominantly affects women. Not only do women have a shorter urethra, making it easier for bacteria to enter the bladder, but approximately half of all women will experience a urinary tract infection at some point in their lives.

You may have a urinary tract infection if you are experiencing a burning sensation when you urinate, unexplained cramping of the lower abdominal region, blood in your urine, or the constant urge to urinate. Here are some ways you can prevent a UTI:

Empty your bladder before and after sex

Sexual activity can introduce bacteria to the entrance of the urethra. It is important to take special measures to ensure that this area is kept clean after activities to prevent the possibility of a UTI developing, so urinating after sex is a great idea.

Drink lots of water

If your urine is particularly yellow or dark, it is an indication that you are not drinking enough water which can lead to a UTI. Increasing your fluid intake can decrease your chances of developing an infection by ensuring that bacteria is being flushed out of your body when you urinate before it can infect you.

Avoid wearing tight, non-cotton clothing

Bacteria thrive in damp, tight environments, therefore it is advised to wear breathable, cotton underwear especially when exercising or during an activity in which you are likely to sweat. It is also important to change out of sweaty clothes after a workout – doing this will eliminate the increased risk of infection.

Avoid using perfumed feminine products

Perfumed products such as body wash, soap, powders, and some sanitary items can increase your chances of developing a UTI. The perfumes in these products can irritate and disrupt the balance of your vagina, getting rid of good bacteria and making it easier for bad bacteria to thrive.

Think about changing your birth control method

Certain contraceptives such as some condoms, the diaphragm, and spermicide can promote bacterial growth. Therefore, it is a good idea to consider other methods of birth control to suit your body that will not contribute to your risk of developing a UTI.
